Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about buying, installing and living with anti-climb intruder spikes. Can’t find your answer? Email support@intruderspikes.co.uk.
Where can intruder spikes be used?
Intruder Spikes are designed for protecting the tops of walls, fences and ledges. They screw down through pre-drilled holes; for concrete or brick use wall plugs (rawlplugs).
Are intruder spikes legal in the UK?
Yes, anti-climb spikes are legal in the UK. You have a duty of care — even to an intruder — under the Occupiers’ Liability Act 1984, so we strongly recommend displaying warning signs prominently along the boundary and avoiding placement on low walls next to public footpaths. Useful resources: Occupiers’ Liability Act 1984.
Do I need to display warning signs?
We strongly recommend displaying warning signs prominently along the boundary. Under the Occupiers’ Liability Act 1984 you owe a duty of care even to intruders, and visible signs are themselves a deterrent to an opportunist intruder. We sell metal warning signs.
How do I work out how many lengths I need?
Each length is 1.2 metres. Measure your wall or fence in metres and divide by 1.2. Example: an 18-metre wall needs 15 lengths (18 ÷ 1.2 = 15).
How much is delivery and how long does it take?
Delivery anywhere in the UK, including Northern Ireland, is a £19 flat rate per order for spikes (one charge regardless of quantity) — APC Overnight for mainland UK, Parcelforce for Northern Ireland, arriving in 2–5 working days with tracking. Sign-only orders ship for £4 (£6 to Ireland). Republic of Ireland delivery is £22 (Parcelforce, 3–6 working days).
Do prices include VAT?
No VAT is added at checkout — the price displayed is exactly what you pay, in the UK and Ireland alike. Please note our invoices are not VAT invoices.
Can intruder spikes be cut to size?
Yes. For sections shorter than a full 1.2m length, cut to size with an angle grinder and metal blade; a hacksaw works too.
What are the spikes made of, and will they rust?
They are made from tough 2mm ribbed steel, galvanised (zinc-coated) for rust protection lasting up to 50 years, so no painting is needed. Black powder-coated versions add extra weather protection. They can be painted if you wish.
What does galvanised mean?
Galvanising is an anti-rust treatment applied to steel: the steel is coated in a layer of zinc, which can prevent rusting for up to 50 years.
Are intruder spikes easy to install?
Yes — they fit in minutes. Screw down through the pre-drilled holes into a fence or wall; use wall plugs (rawlplugs) for concrete or brick. Wear protective gloves, and if you drop a length, let it fall rather than trying to catch it.
How are spikes packed for shipping?
Spikes are secured to a wooden backer and double-boxed to protect the courier and customer. Open the box on the floor, handle the wooden backer, and cut the ties carefully.
How do you ship my order?
All orders ship fully tracked — APC Overnight for mainland UK, Parcelforce for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Delivery is 2–5 working days from order (3–6 for the Republic of Ireland). You will receive tracking information by email as soon as your order ships.
